This page and tabs are dedicated to indigenous people and ethnic minorities, one of the five rightsholder groups within Voice. We have tabs for GRANTEES working with this rightsholder group, CALLS for PROPOSALS dedicated to it and all LINKING & LEARNING efforts -which includes blogs, vlogs, and articles relating to this group.
The ABOUT page will give you a small introduction on indigenous people and ethnic minorities. This includes some general statistics, the status from the three context analyses Voice has done, combined with some external resources that you may find interesting.
Did you know for example that according to the World Bank indigenous groups only makeup 4.5% of the total world population but 10% of the poor? And that their livelihoods are hugely affected by illegal land grabs?
This is also affecting the Voice grantees working on land rights with these groups. Take for example the Ujamaa Community Resource Trust, a global Influencing grantee working on land rights (a thematic area for Voice) in East Africa had to shift some activities and budget when one of their local partners was not granted permission by local authorities to work with communities on land issues. In the Philippines -where the civil society operating environment is generally in peril due to increasing authoritarianism- we are supporting a lot of work led by indigenous people in the Mindanao and Cordillera regions, leading at times to issuing statements of solidarity.
A trend we have seen from the context analyses is that the space for indigenous people and ethnic minorities is shifting – at a more rapid pace than other groups within Voice. This is also confirmed by Peoples Under Threat a website from a previous partner Minority Rights Group International that assesses and measures the risks for indigenous people.
For example, Kenya is ranked 46 in 2019 (down three places compared to 2018) and orange with communities such as the Ogiek and Endorois at risk, using ten different indicators. To help curb this -even at a small scale- Voice is proud to support the Endorois Welfare Council to advance indigenous women’s participation as well as the Ogiek People’s Development Programme to advance the historic land rights ruling of the Africa Court for Human and People’s rights.

Grantees
This page highlights those grants disbursed to groups and organisations working with indigenous groups and ethnic minorities in and across all Voice focus countries. Please note that this can also be done from an intersectional perspective, for example with a strong focus on indigenous women as they face double forms of discrimination due to their ethnicity and gender.
As you can see, land rights is obviously an important issue -becoming highly politicised in the context of corporate land grabbing and the right to self-determination.
