    • Project

ANGGREK MAYA (Association of the Working Revolution Movement of Malang Raya) is an organisation of domestic workers who are expected to advocate for decent work for themselves and other domestic workers. They have called for giving domestic workers the same rights and protections as other workers. Formed and supported under ILO’s Promote programme until September 2017, they however still need assistance to be self-sufficient and facilitate their development from the grassroots to the city level.

Capacity strengthening activities include regular meetings at the community-level to discuss various educational materials on occupational health and safety (K3), work agreements, rights and duties, wages, working hours, etc. Domestic workers are given training to organise, plan, and implement their own programmes as well as on how to register their organisations. They are leveraging SMS, twitter, and Facebook as part of their campaigns as well as using interactive dialogue in radio, TV, and print media. Partnerships are developed with religious leaders who have spiritual and social relationships with the employers of domestic workers.

Organising exposes domestic workers to their peers and enabling them to interact with other organisations. This sensitizes them to the various challenges their peers face, leading to a sense of solidarity towards a common struggle: the elimination of “house-maid” stigma and the fight for decent work. Mentoring during routine community meetings and workshops on international conventions further support them in taking on more active roles in policy-making such as prevention strategies and withdrawal of child domestic workers from abusive employers.
