Women and girls represent half of the world’s population. Women around the world suffer violations of their human rights throughout their lives, and realizing women’s human rights is one of Voice’s priorities. Global estimates published by WHO indicate that about 1 in 3 (35%) of women worldwide have experienced either physical and/or sexual intimate partner violence or non-partner sexual violence in their lifetime.
In Philippines, Mindanao Tri-people Women Resource Center, an Empowerment grantee addresses the needs faced by Internally displaced women who are at risk of Gender based violence by creating safe spaces for dialogue and protective mechanisms that can be put inplace. Approximately 130 million girls and women in the world have experienced female genital mutilation / cutting, with more than 3 million girls in Africa annually at risk of the practice. Over 60 million girls worldwide are child brides, married before the age of 18, primarily in South Asia (31.3 million) and sub-Saharan Africa (14.1 million). Violence and abuse characterise married life for many of these girls. Women who marry early are more likely to be beaten or threatened, and more likely to believe that a husband might sometimes be justified in beating his wife.
In Niger, Influencing grantee, FAD Niger is promoting the retention of girls in school through educating communities on the need to have girls in School aided by a bill that was passed in parliament in 2012. In Tanzania, Empowerment grantee, WOTESAWA is working with young women to demand for their rights for quality employment. In Nairobi, 20 percent of women have been sexually harassed at work or school. Flone Initiative, an Empowerment grantee in Nairobi is addressing the barriers and inequalities faced by women who work and use public transportation. They do this through challenging laws and even using art to promote normalisation of women working in the transport industry.
