How we foster curiosity and learning in order to promote positive change in our community.

By: Thongvan Khankham Linking and Learning facilitation Laos.

 Good day,

Please allow us to introduce ourselves. We are the Huam Jai Asasamak Association’s Linking Learning Facilitation team, along with our consortium partner, Phan-Thin Social Enterprise, based in Vientiane, Laos.

 What tool do we use?

We use the FAH tool.

The FAH tool is an acronym for Facilitation, Action, and Harvesting, and it was created with the goal of guiding rightsholders through the Linking and Learning process, shifting them from “storyteller to implementer.” FAH is a learning tool for Voice grantees in the new phase, and we are confident that it will be extremely beneficial in developing their personnel and the organization.

The concept of linking and learning is all about bringing knowledge, lessons, and experiences from within an individual or organization out into the world to inspire action. The action process entails identifying best practices in a person’s or organization’s work process and making them visible and accessible in the form of tools or media related to the work. As a result of using this tool, rightsholders will be able to share their knowledge with others in order to improve the instrument’s development.

Facilitation refers to the process of assisting learners in changing their knowledge, attitudes, and skills in order to achieve a specific goal.

Action refers to the act of doing something in order to achieve a goal or objective.

Harvesting refers to the act of gathering information over a period of time.

Many people have asked us why we believe in this tool.

The reason is as follows… The “FAH” tool is simple to configure, allowing the rightsholders group to learn at their own pace, method, and skill level. When they reach the point where they can no longer go any further, they can return to where they started.

We believe that the FAH tool helps to keep learning progressive, even it can be slow sometimes. We believe that the FAH tool helps to keep learning progressive, even it can be slow sometimes.

  • FAH assists the rightsholders in identifying self-transformation potential, identifying opportunities, and leveraging motivation tailored to their specific needs.
  • FAH assists the rightsholders in identifying self-transformation potential, identifying opportunities, and leveraging motivation tailored to their specific needs.
  • FAH guides the rightsholders in identifying and achieving their own learning objectives.
  • FAH supports the rightsholders in thinking analytically and logically, identifying options for doing certain activities, and seeing the connection between cause and effect.
  • FAH enables the rightsholders to see how learning resulted in a change in their behavior, which influenced the success of the work or activity.
  •  FAH assists the rightsholders in developing individual and/or group-level learning networks in order to expand their own and others’ learning.

In addition to using FAH tool, we chose the 3E process to apply the knowledge available in the expansion into actual practice:  The 3E procedure is as follows:

  • Explore is a search/study. Because each person and organization has different knowledge and experience, it is necessary to identify what knowledge and expertise can benefit and develop to the next step in order to make the most of the existing knowledge and experience.
  • The experiment is the systematic testing of a hypothesis to prove or disprove its rationality. It is the next step after an exploration.
  • Exchange refers to the interchange of experimental results published through focus group discussions, conference presentations, online media, and so on.

What about your team/organization? Do you use any tools, or do you have a successful methodology in your organization that you would like to share? We recognize that some tools perform differently in different contexts. Learning is a never-ending process, we are eager to learn more from all of you and will adapt to Laos where possible.

We hope you enjoyed the sharing, and look forward to learning from you.
