This page and tabs are dedicated to Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Intersex (LGBTI) people. We have tabs for GRANTEES working with or representing this rightsholder group, CALLS for PROPOSALS dedicated to it and all LINKING & LEARNING efforts -which includes blogs, vlogs and articles relating to this group.
The ABOUT page will give you a small introduction to LGBTI people. This includes some general statistics; the status from the three context analyses Voice has done, combined with some external resources that you may find interesting. LGBTI rights have made significant progress over the past few years –but only in some parts of the world. In many places where Voice operates, the everyday lived experiences of the LGBTI community range from acceptance without legal recognition to widespread stigmatisation and persecution. In a surprising number of countries, the penalty for same-sex relationships is prison with governments using outdated colonial-era laws. In certain Voice focus countries in Africa and Asia, such as in Uganda, Tanzania and Indonesia, the general space for the LGBTI community has shrunk alarmingly.
There are 73 countries –mostly in the Middle East, Africa and Asia –where homosexual activity between consenting adults is illegal, according to Equaldex, a collaborative LGBTI rights website. Voice grantees are working hard in identifying opportunities where they can creatively influence society and shift the narrative about what it means to be a citizen from the LGBTI community.
There are two emerging trends among the LGBTI grantees:
1) The use of creative forms of expression to influence communities, and
2) To mobilise and organise groups in order to get official recognition as part of civil society.
Grantees have been using creative expressions to start conversations in non-confrontational ways. CamASEAN, one of the first Empowerment grantees in Cambodia, documented the lives of lesbian and transmen couples from the countryside. Photos showing the couples doing mundane everyday tasks were shared in numerous locations and homes of couples through a roving exhibit, sparking conversations on what it means to be different and “normal” at the same time.
Regional Empowerment grantee ASEAN SOGIE Caucus is working on a multi-country project where they collect cultural stories representing the LGBTI community. They want to highlight how the LGBTI community is rooted in Southeast Asia’s traditions and not something foreign or imported. There is also a great desire to be organised and registered as a formal civil society organisation. Grantees see this as a significant step in their advocacy as it is a form of official recognition by those in authority.
Empowerment grantee San Julian Pride has been organising student LGBTI organisations in their central Philippine province. Their efforts are part of a grassroots campaign called #RuralAndEqual to show the strength and dignity of the LGBTI community even in more remote communities. Proud to be Us Laos, another Empowerment grantee, is attempting to be the very first registered LGBTI civil society organisation in the country. Even though the process is long and challenging, they believe now is the time to show what the LGBTI community can contribute to Lao national development. Their organisational development has been written up in a great Voice of Change.
