Needs & Challenges of older people in Cambodia: a research report
Jointly executed by the National Institute of Social Affairs and HelpAge Cambodia, this study is part of the influencing project Voicing Marginalised Older People
The study aims at understanding the needs and challenges of older people and their health issues and health care, economic opportunities, family dependence, social protection, and community engagement. Findings help educate the public about the current needs and what support needs to be prioritised to fulfill the potential of our senior citizens.
A mixed methodology was adopted for the study to capture the holistic views, concerns and recommendations or feedback from relevant stakeholders (including elders) and to understand the relation between different needs and challenges of the elderly. There are five locations selected for the detailed research – Phnom Penh, Battambang, Kampong Cham, Prey Veng and Kampot involving 316 older persons including 219 women aged between 60 to over 90. The research explores different aspects of the elderly population in the study areas for instance their ADL/IADL performance, disabilities, cognitive and depression, dietary nutrients, family health care and economic support, and abuses. More in-depth analysis i.e. correlation is tested to understand certain relation and influence of some variables.
