Changemaker is the word that best describes Cynthia Makena. She is a feminist and a dedicated human rights advocate, known for her storytelling abilities and a strong commitment to capacity strengthening, fostering learning and development, and safeguarding human rights. Makena has a background as a former cadet officer and is also a certified trainer. Throughout her professional journey, she has worked with LGBTQIA+ community and organisations specifically in LBQ GNC organising and movement building. Additionally, she has engaged in the education sector, specifically supporting adolescents and women. She thrives in a variety of settings, from peri-urban and rural areas to informal settlements, where she enjoys collaborating with minority groups.
Makena’s passion lies in making meaningful social impact and has been recognised for her contributions to discussions and articles concerning the integration of gender in education and dpecifically on the effects of COVID-19 on girls’ education. Academically, Makena possesses a Post Graduate degree in Education, a Bachelor’s degree in Gender and Development Studies, and is presently pursuing a Master’s degree in Sociology, with a specialisation in Gender and Development. Beyond her professional and academic pursuits, she derives joy from meeting and engaging with people from diverse backgrounds, as well as travelling and exploring.
