Forum Film Dokumenter (FFD) focuses on the development of documentary film as a medium of expression and ecosystem of knowledge through exhibition, education, and archiving. Certain traits differentiate documentary films from other audiovisual products. It holds a significant place in filmmaking that educates, reflects, and transcends time and space. Documentary films hold its own role as an independent, aspirational media amidst the strong current of mass media.
Since 2002, FFD has consistently organised the very first documentary film festival in Southeast Asia: Festival Film Dokumenter. The festival always tries to observe certain social issues as its focus. It creates a bridge between documentary filmmakers, professional filmmakers, and the general audiences with the purpose of improving the quality and quantity of Indonesian documentary films. Since then, the production of documentaries has gradually increased from only 35 films in 2002, to 177 films in 2017. It can also be observed from the growth of the festival audience. From only 1,903 attendees in 2015, the number has increased to 2,579 last 2017.
FFD has indirectly affected the establishment of film studies departments in several universities in the region. Films FFD selects become important for film studies. The use of documentaries as a medium for discussion and learning, is now increasingly popular among youth in Indonesia.
FFD has several publication strategies, such as, through printed and billboard publication, social media publication (Instagram, Facebook, Twitter), as well as running a mass media partnership with radio stations and daily newspapers both nationally and internationally.

Project
Cinema is a powerful tool to convey specific messages for specific purposes. Forum Film Dokumenter (FFD) intends to use the medium to convey messages on disability rights awareness. With this project, FFD aims to enhance the effect/impact of films about disabilities through virtual reality (VR) documentary production. VR cinema’s strength is to enable audiences to feel the reality of what it is like to live with disabilities.
The project starts with research in the selected regions to map the disability rights problems and identify a path for advocacy. The production phase follows with film-making workshops from mentors who teach and facilitate VR documentary production for selected young film-makers. The next step is the exhibition process during the FFD film festival. Disability rights communities/organisations, stakeholders, decision makers, activists, and the general audience are invited to experience the stories captured in the VR documentaries.
The project hopes to increase awareness and special attention given to disability issues through the opportunities for heightened experiences provided by VR documentaries. Experiencing a different reality can be a starting point to give insight on the challenges people with disabilities live with everyday. By using this technology and form of documentary, further productions about these issues can be attained; building towards a greater calls for immediate response and action.

FFD produced eight documentery using VR as a medium that can be seen watched here . This innovative approach has succeeded in raising public awareness about disability issues. The direct involvement of the PwD as the ones who deliver the messages in eachof the films strengthened the narratives of their life journey and struggles. Their role in the films has changed the issues on disability. The pre-production and the dissemination process of this project has enlightened FFD that the new media (VR) can be used to expand the changes of issues, especially in campaigning the disability issues.
For FFD, this alternative method (VR) is a new thing for them. There are a lot of gesture that happened by the audience, such as guessing what is in front of them, thus this awareness needs to be exposed. At the internal level, FFD has more internalized the issue of inclusivity, especially about disability. For example: when holding a festival, they have to consider the needs of PwD. Some of filmmaker also grown a new perspective about PwD.
