Tribeless Youth is a youth initiative established with a vision to promote peaceful coexistence among the youth in Kenya. The organization’s mission is to demystifying the ideologies of #my tribe, my people and enhance unity of purpose amongst Kenya’s youthful generation. It is an initiative meant to oversee the change, the mental shift from tribal-based politics to issue based elections where leaders shall be elected out of their competence and policies and not through tribe in an effort to build a generation of change makers; a powerful youthful generation that will not be used by politicians, and tribal lords to cause chaos, but which will transform Kenya in as far as its leadership is concerned. Amplifying the national values that unite Kenyans through engaging youth through cultural activities that will bring people together, the organization provides civic education on the effects of negative ethnicity and the importance of peaceful coexistence.
Tribeless Youths goal is to challenge and change the narrative that tribes are the problem by going back into history and use the lessons and the experiences of history to redefine the future. In an effort to create more opportunities for the youth in the target areas, they work to enhance and build their capacities through trainings on new media, production and content generation. Through its website and new media platforms, Tribeless Youth provides a platform for youth voices to be heard.

Project
Through the already existing hubs in Nakuru, Laikipia and Kisumu, Tribeless youth will host informal dialogue forums through storytelling (with lessons possessed with and from the elderly), fusing ART, capacity building the hubs to use existing and new and emerging digital media platforms to shape online campaigns and trends as well as host exchange programmes that will be geared towards civic education and public awareness campaigns that change attitudes. The exchange forums will provide the marginalized youth with a platform to share their views and perspectives, on crucial issues pertaining and affecting their communities, counties and country and to think of solutions to address the issues.
The key objective of this project is to reawaken the youth, reaching the minorities, empowering them with new digital media skills and advocacy training through storytelling and ART to help them address and VOICE issues that are barely addressed, in addition to becoming economically empowered and effectively engaged democratically. Tribeless Youth believes that young people in Kenya should seek to be informed and consulted about decisions affecting their socio-economic and political well being, made in their communities and in turn, they should be able to take positive and constructive action to influence changes potentially affecting them.

Generation knowledge transfer for peaceful co-existence
Peaceful coexistence among different communities remains elusive in Kenya because of negative perceptions held between the different communities. Tribeless Youth through their empowerment grant sought to challenge and change the narrative that tribes are the problem by going back into history and using the lessons and experiences of history to redefine the future. In this video, Tribeless Youth share a snippet of open session with the elderly and youth sharing their views of the world.
In the 3 regions (Kisumu, Laikipia, Nakuru) Tribeless Youth implemented the project, the project purposed to use the endangered wealth of knowledge carried by the elderly as a key towards social justice and the young people are the beneficiaries of this knowledge while at the same time, amplifying voices of the elderly. This was to help the young people use history carried by their elders to draw parallels about political participation then and now.
This resulted in the ability to impart digital literacy skills to communities as well as educate them on embracing story telling as a tool of claiming spaces in political participation as well as learning about their history. The digital media trainings gave rightsholders the ability to communicate with one another and stakeholders more freely as well as to create influential social organising skills among the groups facing marginalisation. The trainings, 2 in each county, saw communities amplify societal misdeeds and bring about the much-needed change. They utilised social media to package their ideas and run effective advocacy campaigns as well as reach wider audiences mostly the marginalised. Here is a snapshot of their digital media training. This has put more power in the hands of minorities who have embraced social activism to effect change on their own terms
In Kisumu County, Laikipia and Nakuru County, the rights holders used social media to mobilise communities to demand for better service delivery. The stakeholders in the three counties held protests demanding an end to police brutality, they demanded for better services in county health facilities as well as demand for the end of public resources plunder. Story-telling and advocacy also played a vital role in empowering communities. In the implementation period, Tribeless Youth learnt that storytelling connects humans to our humanity. It is what links us to our past, and provides a glimpse into our future as youth.
Through advocacy, the young people have been able to shun apathy, learn from each other and demand for the address of issues that affect their societies. Exchange programmes/boot camp sessions created opportunities for participants from Laikipia, Nakuru and Kisumu, to learn, to prosper, and to work together to solve shared challenges and ensure a secure future for youth to raise their voices, and create future leaders who instinctively appreciate the value of inter-county collaboration and learning. These enabled breaking of barriers of the intercountry overarching issues i.e. muzzling of youth voices, lack of public discourse and participation.
The team worked with a group of 87 activists in educating the masses to embrace active non-violence and ART as a means of activism. In Kisumu, the team is putting a historical library for the community where young people can visit and learn about their history.
