    • Project

Tanzania Bora Initiative implements a fourteen-month Serikali Yangu project (meaning My Government in Swahili).

Serikali Yangu is a citizen-centric programme that aims to empower young Tanzanians in Handeni and Mikumi constituencies to tackle unemployment through entrepreneurship and business capacity-building. The project helps trained youth to join established Savings and Credit Cooperatives (SACCOS) managed by Local Government Authorities, through which the Youth Development Fund (YDF) is channeled as per directives of the Prime Minister#s Office and YDF guidelines. Working with the Youth Development Officers in Mikumi and Handeni (these are in charge of the YDF, and have in-depth awareness of how it works and facilitate access) helps trained youth join the SACCOs and have access to capital to start small businesses.

The project also facilitates interaction among and between the trained youth and the Youth Development Officers. The interaction takes place through invitations in the training sessions, dialogues and through the Serikali Yangu mobile platform that is conducted in the form of SMS every month.

  • Project journey

Community members from Mikumi and Handeni, especially youth and women, got the opportunity to have an online space, which they can use to interact among themselves and their leaders. Through serikali yangu mobile app developed and serikali yangu website platform, the community members will be able to give their opinions on matters concerning governance and development processes to their leaders.

Local government leaders, Members of Parliament, youth networks and media, are exposed to the intervention that demonstrates improved engagement in eliciting opinions and following up on governance while exposing youth to create livelihood opportunities through youth development fund, and positively influencing their civic engagement.

The marginalized groups in Handeni and Mikumi have currently formed and joined the small entrepreneurship groups, though there are some which are in the registration process and have been brought closer to the Community Development Officers (CDOs) of their respective districts (in Handeni and Mikumi). These groups are now applying for the loans that are available to the youth and women in their District Councils Funds.

Youth and women trained during the entrepreneurship training in Mikumi sum up to 51 including 22 males and 29 females and participants trained in Handeni Vijijini sum up to 51 including 18 males and 33 females. They have organized themselves into art performance groups to start providing awareness to fellow youth and women.

They have formed two groups, one group is an acting performing group and the other is a choir performing group. These groups performed during the grass-root dialogue, before the audience where the District Executive Director (DED)was present.
