The Takienglao Community Group

The Takienglao Community Group is a non profit group that has worked under the umbrella of the Lao Buddhist Fellowship Organization and grew out of the innovation and creativity of a group of Lao development outreach volunteers. They have worked extensively with rural communities and collaboratively with government theatre groups, media and expert artists in Lao PDR and elsewhere over the last five years, including the Philippines Education Theatre Association (PETA) and Kaoniew theatre group. The objective to engage the target populations in an active and amusing manner, the group decided to integrate outreach advocacy and community theatre performance into their outreach, believing it would positively contribute to behavior change. The group uses participatory approaches to actively involve the target groups in the outreach work with hard to reach population including young migrant workers, ethnic women and children and vulnerable of young girls who affected by health impact from Lao economic investment and human trafficking. The group is now concentrating on building a community of committed and progressive self-support group model and artists who are advocates for cultural, economic and personal development work. They aim to sustain, strengthen and expand partnerships and alliances with other group including theatre performing troupes through networking, capacity building and exchanging performance ideas, issues and solutions.

Project
Overall objective: To contribute to the creation of an enabling environment for community on participation effectively in the formulation and implementation of policies and strategies to end gender-based violence and Nutrition Access;
Specific objective: To increase the technical capacity of Ethnic Women self-support group to mobilise communities and duty bearers to take action to end violence against marginalised and vulnerable women including nutrition access.
In order to achieve significant impact at scale in promoting and protecting the rights of women, particularly poor ethnic minority including youth elderly and disability women to a life free from violence and in raising awareness of Lao citizens regarding this fundamental human right, a Community Engagement Model for Gender Based Violence and Nutrition Access.
This in turn supports the promotion and inclusion of civil society organisations and community itself in policy dialogue in the formulation and implementation of national strategies and sector policies. The Action includes strong support to build the organisational and technical capacity, especially through coaching and the expansion of their field presence of both TAKIENGLAO and the Lao Gender Network, of organisations that have the best chance of engaging with and influencing policy makers on the issue of GBV.
Its emerging importance as a priority in Laos and the region will allow more CSOs to gain expertise in a technical area with potential for ongoing involvement after the Action, through other funding sources. GBV is an issue that depends on social change, making it highly amenable to advocacy and as such a good vehicle within which CSOs can learn and practice techniques to change attitudes, values, beliefs and behaviours and to influence policy formulation and implementation.
