SAKABATAAN taking the lead in promoting young farmer rights and agenda

Tumatanda, Pero Hindi Bumabata. The average age of the Filipino Farmer is from 55-59 years old, highlighting the migration of rural youth to non-farming occupations. The Food and Agricultural Organization has identified six pillars to arrest this trend and SAKAbataan aims to address one of them: Participation of Young Farmers in Policy Dialogue. In response to this growing agricultural problem, SAKAbataan made the sixth focal point to fulfilling its main development goal, prioritizing the promotion of an agricultural sector policy to be responsive to the needs and interests of young farmers and increase youth participation in the sector. To achieve this, young farmers are empowered not only to effectively engage and influence policy dialogues and implementation but also to articulate and create their version of the Magna Carta for Young Farmers that will be lobbied and championed both in local and national policy-making bodies.

Pangarap at Pagkilala. Youth farmer-led, multisectoral coalitions are set ups to serve as an ecosystem of support for young farmers at the national level, and in localities in the Philippines. Two years since the project was launched, SAKAbataan successfully convened three young farmer-led coalitions — Pamatano-n Nga Mangunguma Sang Negros Alliance (PAMANA) in Negros Occidental, Kabataang Sama-samang Pinaglalaban ang Karapatan ng mga Magsasaka (KASAPIKA) in Nueva Ecija, and Alliance of Laguna Farmers and Advocates (ALFA) Laguna. The project also included multi-sectoral partnerships; thus allowing for an intersectoral, and intergenerational collaboration to ensure holistic support in pushing for young farmers’ agenda. Despite many organizing challenges faced by the team during the pandemic due to mobility restrictions, contact-building through established networks of CYAN and CARET supported the organizing aspect of the project. ‘‘Nakita namin ang kahalagahan ng pagbuo ng organisasyon para sa aming mga kabataang magsasaka’’ – Mark Fierro, Former PAMANA Chairperson
