Financial independence amplifies the voice of young women and mothers
Destined Women (DW) is committed to changing the destiny of child mothers in 2 districts of Omoro district, Acholi sub region. DW successfully implemented the Mother Child Rehabilitation and Empowerment (CMRE) project that enhanced capacities of young women, child mothers and school drop outs by teaching various vocational skills. They were additionally empowered to engage in income generating activities that supported them earn a living and take care of their families. Gloria Adong and Esther Anita are just but a few voices that echo this success.
In 2016, Gloria Adong, a 17-year-old primary school pupil became pregnant and later dropped out of school.
“I had a lot of challenges and my parents were poor. They could not afford to pay my school fees neither take care of me as a teenage girl,” said Adong who lives in Kal ‘A’ village in Koro Sub County with her parents.
Until 2018, Adong and her 2-year-old daughter were a burden to her parents. After receiving training by Destined Women, she worked very hard and started paying school fees for her daughter and could foot her medical bills.
“The vocational training I received from Destined Women turned around my life. I can now say I am self-sufficient and can provide for my daughter,” said Adong.
Destined Women also promoted advocacy for the rights of girl-children and women in Adong’s village; and being a child focused organisation; it also strengthened the capacity of the members Local Council Officials (LCs) to effectively legislate in council.
After dropping out of school at a tender age of 17, Esther Anita found herself marrying a man older than her elder brother. She was lured into marriage after her parents failed to raise her school fees.
Anita is grateful to Destined Women(DW) for giving her another opportunity in life.
“The training provided another chance in my life. I can now plait hair and earn a living. I can now sew clothes and get paid. With the little money I am getting, I have saved and started another business and my earnings have increased from less than 5,000 a day to over 20,000 Shillings.
“Without Destined Women, I don’t know how my life would be. My life will never be the same without the trainings I received,” says Ms Anita.
