Gender inequality and inequity remains a persistent problem across Kenya’s cultural, corporate and political spheres. Despite significant policy adjustments that seek to redefine the role of women in society, their participation and visibility remains low. This has often been attributed to deep seated socio-economic structures that have confined women to the fringes of leadership and political
participation. New media offers a medium through which this can be rectified by enabling women who have broken social barriers to share their experiences with their peers. This project seeks to avail an opportunity for this powerful dialogue by adding the voice of women to the popular Makarao animation series produced by Mfalme Productions. It combines traditional and new media technologies to deliver a message of freedom and empowerment to a diverse audience while transferring relevant skills to content creators with a demonstrated passion for digital storytelling.
