The National Obstetric Fistula Referral Centre serves women with fistula. The majority of these women come from the countryside but also from urban areas and in most cases were married off too young. Obstructed labour is often the cause of fistula leaving women to fend for themselves. The survivors are referred to the referral centre where they are inadequately cared for medically and socially, as they are almost always abandoned by their loved ones.
Marginalised and stigmatised, they are left without any income, which increases their vulnerability, leading to psychological challenges and loss in self-esteem. In order to improve the daily lives of these women in a sustainable way, CODECO plans to provide socio-psychological, economic and technical support to the survivors in need of guidance. By boosting their self-confidence, the women will be able to be the voice of those who secretly suffer in their flesh and blood, to raise public awareness of this disease and thus enable them to fight effectively against the practices at the root of these illnesses.
