A gentle soul is no longer among us…..
It is with sadness and shock that we learned that Sekou Doumbouya was taken away from us on Monday 20 April in a hospital in Tunis. He just turned 38.
Sekou was a true friend and family member of Voice, committed to our spirit and value of NOthing about us Without Us. Right since the start of Voice in 2016 he was our Finance Officer based at Oxfam in Mali. During the two years he spent with us, he grew as a professional as well as a person. Where at first his commitment to Voice came from a deep-rooted belief in social justice, it later evolved to a passion for the rights for ALL, a world free of discrimination regardless of who you are. This move from a charitable to a rights-based approach was the result of a personal reflection and professional growth, immersing himself in listening, being humble as well as having deep conversations with all, during the many times we spent together in workshops, monitoring visits and learning events.
Sekou became one of those rare Finance Officers who was able to balance the demand for accountability with the organisational capacity and growth of our partners. He did this with grace and a friendly smile – which made the feedback he gave partners always appreciated and respected. His commitment, eternal optimism and professionalism helped to make Voice in Mali to the vibrant and diverse programme it is today – something we are eternally grateful for.
Rest in power, gentle soul. Our deepest thoughts and sympathy are with his wife, two kids and further family and friends during this difficult time.
