Va Seng, est un jeune homme appartenant à une minorité ethnique. Originaire de Luang Prabang, il a déménagé à Vientiane pour poursuivre des études en médias. Il est arrivé à Vientiane avec une passion pour la communication et les médias, mais ayant grandi à la campagne, la photographie était très nouvelle pour lui. Malgré cela, il a reconnu qu’il s’agissait d’une tendance populaire parmi les jeunes et il s’y est montré enthousiasmé. Ce n’était pas la seule chose qui le surprenait. Lorsqu’il doit vivre dans le même foyer d’accueil avec un groupe de jeunes d’origines ethniques différentes, qui parlent des dialectes et des langues différents, qui préfèrent manger des aliments différents et s’habiller différemment, il subit un énorme choc culturel.

En 2019, Va Seng s’était inscrite à un programme de stage avec l’Agence de Développement Rural x Mind Media appelé « Projet InYouth* », financé par la subvention Voice Innovate and Learn. Il est l’un des 18 stagiaires qui ont contribué au développement de « House the Series », un drame de divertissement éducatif sur les LGBTQI et la santé sexuelle. L’expérience loin de chez lui lui a offert une opportunité époustouflante de se connecter et d’apprendre de ses pairs, ainsi que d’établir des relations et de comprendre les choses sous un angle totalement nouveau. Avec d’autres jeunes, ils ont créé un environnement sûr dans lequel ils pouvaient partager librement sans craindre d’être jugés. Il a découvert qu’être dans un environnement respectueux et bienveillant favorise la croissance et le développement. Des pairs qui le soutenaient lui ont procuré un sentiment d’appartenance où sa voix a été entendue, ses idées et ses opinions ont été prises en compte et, par conséquent, il a énormément grandi. Il est progressivement devenu plus confiant qu’au premier jour du programme. En conséquence, il a fait des progrès significatifs.

Le programme lui a non seulement permis de mettre en pratique ses compétences en cinéma, mais lui a également donné l’occasion d’acquérir de nouvelles compétences, telles que l’écriture de scénarios, l’arpentage de lieux et les compétences d’atelier de conception en tant qu’animation et contenu créatif.

Engagement in the program not only provided him an opportunity for forging new partnerships and alliances that opened up new frontiers for him, he also gained gender advocacy knowledge, which was the primary goal for all Lao youths in this Innovate and Learn grant.  He acquired a variety of both soft and hard skills that enables him to win a small grant from STELLA** for the Kup Ban Kun (Let’s return home) project.  

Va Seng once stated in the World’s Youth Skill video 2020 that he is from a town where the majority of the people are poor, farming for a living, and where families cannot afford to send their children to a good school. They do not have the opportunity to improve their skills and so he applies the knowledge he gained from the InYouth project in a local project in his hometown of Luang Prabang.  He has also embarked on a program to teach English to primary school students while also using the filmmaking skills he learned through the InYouth project to capture children’s enthusiasm for learning in order to demonstrate to society that the children are keen to learn and that they deserve equal opportunity and access to education. 

This is a significant shift for a young ethnic boy who merely desired to complete his studies and return home with hopes of finding a good job and making a difference in his own life. What Va Seng he is doing is beyond what he had hoped. After the project was completed in January 2021, he and three other peers decided to form the “InYouth Media Production Group’ to continue supporting the media particularly in development areas and to actively observe and participate in the community’s positive changes. 

In November 2021 Va Seng accompanied with his mentor, Miss Chanthalangsy, the director of the Rural Development Agency, were invited to an Innovate and Learn grant information session to share Va Seng’s learnings and his journey since receiving the Voice grant. As a proud rights holder, he explained that these experiences were invaluable and indeed were a life changing milestone, much more than he had expected.  

Van Seng hopes and wishes that young people will be able to discover what they enjoy doing, learn from it, and share what they have learned with society in order to improve the community’s livelihoods.
