by Association Femmes et TIC and Web TV Kunafoni, Linking & Learning Facilitator, Voice in Mali
Organised by the Linking and Learning Component of Voice in Mali made up of the Association Femmes et TIC and Web TV Kunafoni, with the support of OXFAM in Mali, this closing event marked a crucial step in our commitment to a more inclusive and equitable society for all. Among the highlights is the public event which brought together more than 150 people from international non-government organisations (NGOs), civil society NGOs, grantee partners, rightsholders and representatives of the government and embassies including The Netherlands.
The final event was held from 04 to 6 June, with the first two days dedicated to “Connection and Learning” activities, and the last day as the public event. Here is an overview of the activities and highlights of the event:
- A modest and solemn opening ceremony,
- 80 partners including rightsholders were represented,
- International partners invited,
- Two days of group work which provided an opportunity to exchange and share lessons and experiences that have been successful or have failed, and to find new ideas that will serve to better amplify the voices of rights holders,
- Lessons learned, good documentation of experiences acquired, telling one’s story from a scenario, introduction to inclusive communication, are among other works carried out,
- Discussions on progress on legislation and public policies promoting the inclusion of rights holders,
- Inspiring testimonials from people living with disabilities about their journeys and successes,
- Exhibition presenting three Voice grants (under Influence, Empowerment and Amplication pathways) made by partners and rightsholders; and
- Talent demonstrations by rights holders in various fields such as music, dance and sport.
There were also awards honouring organisations and institutions that have made a significant contribution to the promotion of the rights of people living with disabilities and to all Voice rights holders in general. All sessions were interactive and the workshops identified next steps and priority actions to maintain the momentum of the programme beyond its formal conclusion, including setting up a monitoring committee.
In over eight years, the program has achieved significant results, such as:
- Ongoing or Adoption of new policies and legislation in favour of the rights of persons with disabilities in education, the civil service, women’s rights and the fight against violence and discrimination;
- Increased public awareness of the challenges faced by people with disabilities;
- Capacity building of rights holders through training and support programmes; and
- Creation of strong networks of collaboration between governmental and non-governmental organisations, as well as local communities, including the fight against descent-based slavery.
The final event was a celebration of our collective achievements and a reminder of the importance of continuing to work together for a society where every individual, regardless of ability, can live fully and equitably. We thank all those who have contributed to the success of this program and are committed to continuing our mission for a more inclusive future that respects the rights of all.
