The Association for the promotion of livestock farming in pastoral zones (ASPEL in short) is an organisation of livestock farmers created in 2006.

The main goals of the organisation include:

• To promote and revitalise livestock breading and improve the conditions of living of herders.
• To develop solidarity and unity among its members.
• To promote education in a nomadic environment.
• To promote human rights and gender justice policy.

To achieve these goals, ASPEL has experienced implementers among its members.

The Association for the promotion of livestock farming in pastoral zones (or ASPEL) is an organisation operating in the Maradi region in Niger especially the pastoral zones where nomadism is practised. The practice of nomadism is not only a mode of production but also a way of life. The Schooling BORORO young girls project tackles the issue of schooling of young people in the pastoral area of Bermo, and specifically the enrolment and keeping the Bororo girls in school. This project is implemented in the rural municipality of Bermo, the heart of the pastoral zone, more than 200 km north of Maradi which is, without doubt, the most isolated municipality in the Region.

The project organises sensitisation sessions, listening frameworks at schools, radio debates and advocacy to challenge the awareness of all stakeholders (municipal authorities, leaders of Peuls Bororos groups, village leaders, leaders of ethnic groups, pupils’ parents). As a result, the low schooling rate of children in general and girls in particular may improve.
