    • Project

The project “Empowering Women in the Peri-urban Commune IV in Niamey” aims to support vulnerable women in the neighborhoods of Talladje and Kobontafa. The project is based on the observation that peri-urban neighborhoods are generally populated by low-income populations who most often leave rural areas due to difficulties (food insecurity due to low productivity of land or drought, employment opportunities, etc.) and finally settle down while leaving their capital,  such as land, behind.

Women from these households engage in small income-generating activities in addition to the income earned by men to support the needs of families. It should be noted that over time many children are deprived of their right to education to lend strong support to parents to care for the family. This precariousness obliges them to direct any support towards the satisfaction of the family needs.

It is with the above in mind that this project, through its innovative nature, is based on an approach to organise and build the capacity of women one of its priorities. In fact, it is first of all about creating the conditions to live together, to educate oneself, to work, to generate resources, to create jobs together in the long term and thus to promote their empowerment. This results in social cohesion, but also an awareness of their problem and hence solution. Awareness is a leveraging mechanism for finding solutions to women’s problems and controlling their roles and responsibilities. This makes women more dynamic, concerned about their future and encourages active participation in their self-development and development of the country. Four flagship actions constitute the cornerstone of the project’s approach, namely:

      • Women’s capacity building for a transparent management of their structures, a better control of their roles and responsibilities and notions of leadership, providing them with tools to renegotiate their positions in the process of socio-economic development of women in the country
      • A study of the sectors in order to best take into account their aspirations and needs in the activities that the project supports
      • Training women in entrepreneurship by the Street Kids International method
      • The establishment of subsidies and regular support for better management
